The Future of Multi-Media Digital News and Cultural Networks

Friday May 11, 2007, 8-10 p.m.
Corwin Pavilion, UCSB Campus

Free Admission

UCTV Broadcast

In a world of rapidly evolving communication technologies, ethnically and socially diverse populations will need to find new ways to access information and learning opportunities. The commercial media landscape lacks public interest television and web-delivered video content offering thoughtful discussion that is non-partisan, non-commercial, and which incorporates multiple perspectives.

This panel discussion brings together top researchers and leaders from the University of California state-wide system, including leadership of UCTV, the national satellite channel of the UC system, as well as broadcast and digital media entrepreneurs, community media coordinators, new media researchers, and audience members to present their experiences, innovations and visions for the future of multi-media digital news and cultural networks.

Forrest Sawyer will open the evening with an overview of the digital media landscape. Sawyer has 25 years of anchoring and reporting experience with ABC, NBC, and CBS News. He has covered numerous major breaking and investigative stories, including every United States military engagement since 1972, as well as the fall of the Soviet Union. Sawyer is the recipient of seven national Emmy awards and the prestigious George Foster Peabody Award. He also works with corporate, government, and non-profit organizations to develop multi-platform communications strategies that take advantage of the emerging digital world, and speaks to groups around the country about the information revolution.

Following his presentation, Mr. Sawyer will moderate a “town hall” discussion with the audience and several panels featuring the following outstanding media professionals, researchers, and UC leaders who have been working together in a half-day workshop to generate a series of central issues related to the future of multi-media digital news and cultural networks.

This event will be filmed, edited, and made available through UCTV, via cable and satellite in California, and via scheduled and on-demand Internet viewing.  See www.uctv.tv for details.
