SANTA BARBARA – KCSB-FM and
the Center for Film, Television and New
Media present popular radio and TV journalist, Amy
Goodman, host of Democracy
Now!– a daily international
radio and TV news show -- for a lecture, discussion,
and book signing, on Sunday, September 24th, 7:30pm,
at UCSB’s Campbell Hall. The appearance
is promoting Goodman’s new book, Static:
Government Liars, Media Cheerleaders, and the People
Who Fight Back (Hyperion), co-written
with brother David Goodman (who is introducing her
at the event), and is part of a tour that also marks
the 10th Anniversary of DN! and benefits community
radio stations throughout the country.
Static discusses
government manipulation of the news, media corruption,
and harassment of Bush administration critics, while
also telling stories of people often overlooked in
the mainstream press, such as Cindy Sheehan, a protester
who camped outside of Bush’s estate for over
a month, and soldiers fleeing to Canada to avoid the
war.
The event is designed to raise awareness
of these issues, as well as the profile of KCSB and
the independent media movement. “Goodman’s
appearance is likely to be a big draw throughout the
tri-counties, but we’re also enthusiastic about
getting students to attend,” states Nilagia McCoy,
KCSB’s
General Manager. “It’s happening
just before school starts, so there will be a lot of
students around who are new to the area. We’re
hoping they will be interested in this major campus
event even if they aren’t already familiar with
Amy Goodman.”
