Q&A with UCSB Alumnus, Writer/Director Brad Silberling (Lemony Snicket, City of Angels, Moonlight Mile)

10 ITEMS OR LESS is a warm and witty film starring Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman. Freeman, a renowned actor best known for his starring roles in blockbuster suspense thrillers has hit a slump in his career. Hoping to get back in the game, he considers doing an “indie” film about a night manager in a low-rent supermarket. To “study” for his role, he goes to a market in Carson City, California. The actor’s mission goes awry as he discovers that there’s no store manager present and nobody speaks English, with the exception of Scarlet (Paz Vega), the cashier in charge of the ‘10 items or less’ checkout lane. He finds himself stranded in a location – and a world – that is completely unfamiliar. Incapable of doing anything for himself, the pampered star appeals to Scarlet for help. A most unexpected relationship blooms between these two kindred spirits, colliding under the most unlikely of circumstances, each of them discovering that life still has the capacity to surprise and to satisfy.

10 ITEMS OR LESS was writtendirected by Brad Silberling, best known for directing the large-scale studio hits “Lemony Snicket’s: A Series of Unfortunate Events,” and “City of Angels,” .Silberling embraced an “indie” aesthetic in this, his first non-Hollywood film, especially in scale, schedule, and budget. 10 ITEMS OR LESS was shot in fifteen days with a skilled and fast-moving cast and crew. “I wrote this just before I headed off to make ‘Lemony Snicket,’ and after that film where I was in a soundstage environment for two years, I started watching a lot of Italian Neo-realist movies for mental therapy – and I realized I had written a gift for myself, where I could just go out with two great actors on the street, and shoot away.” 10 ITEMS OR LESS was produced by Morgan Freeman’s and Lori McCreary’s Revelations Entertainment and Brad Silberling’s Reveal Entertainment.

10 ITEMS OR LESS will be released in the United States by THINKFilm. Following its theatrical release, it will be the first film to be distributed online by ClickStar (www.clickstarinc.com), a new company founded jointly by the Intel Corporation and Revelations Entertainment, a pioneering step in the development of online movie distribution.

Writer/Director Brad Silberling will attend the screening and hold a Q&A about the film.
