GreenScreen was launched as a pilot project in the Fall of 2007 from a grant awarded by the UCSB Associated Students Coastal Fund. For the past two years the program has created and distributed video designed to educate and raise awareness about the Santa Barbara shoreline and its terrestrial and marine habitats. From the beginning the project’s aim was to combine the creative energy of student filmmakers from across the disciplines with the lived expertise of local Santa Barbarans to explore innovative strategies for environmental education and outreach. In its short existence the project has successfully produced seven films with the participation of over 100 student crew members and 25 local businesses, organizations, and environmental interests.
Film Descriptions 2008-2009
Mira Verde What Now? (environmental horror film) The party lifestyle of college students brings forth an amphibious sea demon hell-bent on devouring discarded red plastic party cups and those that use them. An intrepid professor and a bumbling mayor must figure out what is happening before the entire town is destroyed or quarantined by the government.
We’re Trashed (stop-motion animation) Mating season is interrupted for a group of polar bears when their iceberg breaks loose and floats to Santa Barbara. Social outcast Teddy is the only bear to realize the environmental implications of this sudden change of address. Together with the help of local Santa Barbara animals Teddy raises awareness and changes the behavior of his short-sighted friends.
How to Survive Domoic Acid (mockumentary) In this PSA from 1955, nerdy Dennis dreams of going steady with ocean-loving Sally. To do it he must educate himself about ocean health and domoic acid poisoning. With the help of a scientist, a marine biologist, and a local fisherman, Dennis may just learn enough to become Sally’s “leader of the pack.”
Isla Vista: A Fresh Start (documentary) Construction of a new environmentally-friendly Isla Vista eatery brings together students, teachers and business owners. As the paint and plaster come together inside, outside the landscape and community are threatened by an urban renewal project known as the “Masterplan.” This documentary asks the question, How can a college town maintain its charm and its quality of life in an emerging eco-conscious world?
